Propecia and Hair Loss: Dispelling the Myths

Propecia and Hair LossWhat Is Propecia?

Male pattern baldness is an unfortunately common side effect of age, affecting roughly half of people by the time they reach their 40s. One of the key offenders in accelerating this is dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone derived from testosterone that binds to and shrinks hair follicles, preventing healthy hair growth.

Finasteride (traded as Propecia worldwide) is a commonly prescribed medication to help men decrease levels of DHT to inhibit further hair loss. More powerful doses can be used to treat enlarged prostates. It is most commonly taken as an oral tablet, in a 1mg dose.

However, Advanced Hair Studio has never prescribed Propecia or Finasteride and never will. While this drug may inhibit DHT, it carries a number of negative side effects.

What Are The Side Effects Of Propecia?

Propecia causes a wide range of side effects that need to be seriously considered. Though everyone’s experience will vary, just some of the side effects have included:

  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Swelling
  • Mental fogginess
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Muscle soreness
  • Nausea
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Skin rashes

Propecia also needs to be regularly taken to be effective, so side effects can persist for some time, even once treatment has ceased.

Will Propecia Work For Me?

Propecia should never be used in the fight against hair loss. The side effects are too severe and there are far more effective and much less dangerous option on the market.

Advanced Hair Studio instead uses the topical and patented oral Minoxidil treatment. This treatment facilitates vasodilatation which increases blood flow to the scalp. This prolongs the anagen phase of the hair, and after two to three months, hair loss is significantly reduced, with hair in the telogen phase beginning to grow back.

Minoxidil has proven to effective against many types of hair loss, and is particularly effective when combined with our other state-of-the-art treatments, such as Hairfusion, or Laser Hair Growth Treatment.

In addition, Minoxidil does not carry the serious side effects associated with Propecia. This means that Minoxidil can be used for as long as hair loss persists.

Our hair loss doctors will prescribe an oral dose that matches the severity and of your hair loss, and your physical health. This ensures that you receive the perfect treatment, tailored specifically for your needs.
